Packaging is a wide-ranging and fascinating aspect of design and includes items such as labels, containers, inserts, tags and more. Packaging is sometimes merely decorative, others times an integral and functional part of a product. Because packaging is essential to attracting customer?s attention in a sea of competing products, it must provoke positive feelings and communicate emotions through use of materials, containers, fonts, inks, etc. When really well done, packaging is sometimes saved by consumers and reused either for the same or other purposes. Either way, packaging is an important branding touch point and when well executed, the results can be stunning as well as effective.

In addition to branding needs, packaging also plays an important role in the protection, transportation and even delivery of the product it contains. Labels, dispensing systems, security seals, portion control ? these are all features of a products package that have significant impact on the consumers use of the product, and can impact a consumer?s decision to repurchase in the future. Also important are labels and symbols used in packaging that can crucial product information, including legal language, trademarks, proofs of purchase, bar codes, etc.
Increasingly, consumers are concerned about sustainability and environmentally safe(r) packaging. Choosing materials that create minimum impact on our overly-taxed environment is a great way to show your customers that you are committed to your brand promises.
Point of sale materials are another important branding touch point, and sometimes play an important supporting role in packaging design. A well-designed countertop sign or store display can help draw in potential consumers and make a positive impact on their overall brand experience.
